Frida Kahlo, A Mexican Painter
Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter born in Coyacán, in
1907 on July 6th. She was diagnosed with polio at age six and always used dresses to cover her right leg up (which was smaller than her left leg because of the illness). But even with polio, Frida was still an energetic child who participated in boxing and other activities.
A horrible accident almost killed Frida when she was 18 years old. She was riding in a bus that collided with a trolley car. She was horribly injured and hurt many parts of her body; the most important part she injured was her spine. Because of the accident she suffered for her whole life. She had thirty surgeries in her life. And she also spent about a year in bed recovering from the accident, some of that time she was in a body cast. The accident was a tragedy, but without it she might not have discovered her talent for painting.

Frida Kahlo painted in her bed when she was recovering. Her father set up a contraption for her to be able to paint while lying down. She painted mostly herself. But her work always had a surreal edge to it, and some pieces were completely surreal. She often panted herself in pain. For instance, she painted a necklace of thorns going around her neck with dripping blood. Even though Frida Kahlo's works may have been considered gruesome, she still painted beautifully.

Later in her life Frida Kahlo was able to walk again and she met a man named Diego Rivera. Diego inspired Frida so they got married. But, it wasn't exactly a happy marriage. Both Diego and Frida had numerous affairs, and they both fought with each other every day. Frida once said “I suffered two grave accidents in my life…One in which a streetcar knocked me down and the other was Diego."
